Marble palace is one of the best-preserved and most elegant houses of nineteenth-century Calcutta. It was built in 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick, a wealthy Bengali merchant with a passion for collecting works of art. The house is Neoclassical in style, while the plan with its open courtyards is largely traditional Bengali. The premises also include a garden with lawns, a rock garden, a lake and a small zoo. This palace is divided into five halls and they are Reception Hall, Painting Room, Sculpture Room, Billiards Room and Thakur Dalan. The beautiful decor and art collection of the palace transport its visitors to the Victorian era.
The Victorian furniture, Belgian glassware, game trophies and fine paintings, including originals by Murillo, Reynolds and Rubens are some of the most notable artefacts among the collections of the palace. The Marble Palace opens at 10am and closes at 3pm. As it is private property, hence prior permission from the West Bengal Tourism Information Bureau at BBD Bag is a must. Photography is strictly prohibited in this palace.
