There are two types of an eclipse- solar and lunar. A solar eclipse takes place when the moon is in between the earth and sun. A lunar eclipse takes place when the earth is in between the sun and moon.
There are certain rules followed during an eclipse. the rules are-
- We should not take a bath during the eclipse. During an eclipse, there is darkness around which is a sign of impurity. So, one should have a bath after the eclipse is over.
- Food should not be consumed during the eclipse. Even though the moon and earth cover the sun during solar and lunar eclipse respectively, a few rays escape from the sun and reach earth. These rays are harmful and can spoil the food cooked. this food causes indigestion and an upset stomach. Food should be eaten one hour before the eclipse (light food so it will digest easily) or after the eclipse.
- During a solar eclipse, one shouldn't look at the sun with the naked eye. Due to the sun's harmful rays, seeing it can cause eclipse blindness or retinal burn, which is also called solar retinopathy.
- Solar eclipse should only be viewed through all-purpose solar filters which are there in eclipse glasses and hand-held solar viewers. The lunar eclipse can be seen with the naked eye as it occurs in the night, so it will not harm our eyes.
There can be between two to five solar eclipses in a year while there can be two to three lunar eclipses or none in a year. 1935 was the only year in which five solar eclipses took place and it is anticipated that 2206 will be the next year when five solar eclipses will take place.
