Why this bird is called as crocodile bird?
As we know, Crocodile is a carnivore which means it eats all kinds of animals but do not chew their food, just shallow their entire prey. While swallowing, the bits of flesh gets struck in their teeth.
Often you find them lazing around the sun with their mouth wide open for long time.
Let’s look at the Plover Bird closely.
It gets into the crocodile’s mouth and picks out the tiny bits of food stuck in his teeth. It eats them and often this completes its diet.
This cleans the crocodile’s teeth and keeps his mouth fresh and free from infections.
So, the Plover bird gets her food and the crocodile gets his mouth cleaned. In this way, both are able to help each other.
