The famous temple in temple city is known as ArulmiguMeenakshiSundareshwararTemple.It is a historic Hindu temple located in vaigai river. The governing body of this the temple is Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. It was built by King Kulasekara Pandya (1190-1216 CE).It was rebuilt by the Hindu Nayaka dynasty ruler VishwanathaNayak in the 16th and 17thcentury.It is spread over about 14 acres.
The most special feature of this temple is PotramaraiKulam.There is a four-tower in
this templeThegopuram east to the Sundareshwara shrine is 5 storeyed. It was
completed about 1372 by Vasuvappan after the Vijayanagara rulers reopened the
temple complex after remaining in ruins and dormant for about five decades.
The gopuram west to the Sundareshwara shrine is also 5 storeyed and was
completed around 1374 by Manalapan. The south gopuram is the tallest and
curvilinear. The North Raya gopuram was started by KrishnappaNayakkar, also
called Mottaigopuram. It was completed by the Amaravati PururVayinagaramChettiyar
family in 1878 CE. The festival conduct in this temple are ChithiraiThiruvizha,
Navaratri, Cradle festival, Aavanimoolam, MeenakshiTirukkalyaanam, Alagar’s
river plunge. The temple is a popular site for Hindu weddings, though it is not
the exclusive site.
