MIRACLE FRUIT

    There are many varieties of fruits with certain medicinal values which are not known yet. Synsepalum dulcificum which is commonly known as MIRACLE FRUIT. It is an evergreen shrub that grows in West Africa.

   When eaten, causes a sour taste subsequently consumed to taste sweet. This effect is due to Miraculin.Thisshrub grows 1.8 -4.5 m height. They are clustered at the ends of the branchlets. The flower is white which produces 2cm long red coloured fruit.


  The plant grows best in soils with a pH as low as 4.5 to 5.8, in an environment free from frost and in partial shade with high humidity. It is tolerant of drought, full sunshine and slopes.

   The seeds need 14 to 21 days to germinate. A spacing of 4m between plants is suggested. The seeds are about the size of coffee beans. The fungus Rigidoporus microporous has been found on this plant. 

   Miraculin binds proteins and become able to activate the sweet receptors, resulting in the perception of sweet taste. This effect lasts until the protein is washed away by saliva.


   The berry of the miracle fruit plant is used as medicine. People take miracle fruit to treat diabetes, correct chemotherapy-related taste disturbances. In food, miracle fruit is used as a low-calorie sugar-free sweetener.
