Natyashastra is called Bharatanatyam.The meaning of this Name is Bha meaning emotion (Bhava), Ra meaning music (Raaga), Ta meaning rhythm (Taal) and Natyam meaning dance.Bharata Muni is the father of Bharatanatyam.Bala Saraswati is the queen of Bharatanatyam.Rukmini Devi Neelakanta Shastri is the first bharatnatyam dancer.
This
is almost 2,000 years old. It is believed that Bharatnatyam was revealed by
Lord Brahma to Bharata, a famous sage who then codified this sacred dance in a
Sanskrit text called the Natya Shastra. The Natya Shastra is one of the
fundamental treatises on Indian drama and aesthetics. This dance has both
physical and mental benefits. It gives a wonderful cardio workout, improves
blood circulation, tones muscles and is good for bone density as it is a
contact exercise. While you practice Bharatanatyam, you learn body language
that includes walking movement, the position of feet, postures, glances, head and
neck movement, and supporting hand gestures.
The costumes for women is the Skirt (Saree) Style
or the Pyjama Style. Dancers wear costumes made of silk sarees with gold zari
embroidery designs. The dance usually begins with an opening routine called the
namaskaram. There are 5 styles in this dance. They are Kalamandalam, Melattur Style, Kalakshetra Style, Vazhuvoor
Style and Pandanallur Style. The original name for this dance is Sadiraattam or
Thevarattam. It is previously called Sadhir Attam.
It is
a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. It is a
exclusive dance to Hindu temples through the 19th century. It is an
art that consecrates the body. The gestures used in Bharatanatyam are called
Hasta and they are three types. This
dance also involves yoga asanas such as Dhanurasana, Chakrasana,
Vrikshasana and Natarajasana.It helps to
reduce our body weight.
