BLOOD OF BIRDS
BECOME AS RADIATOR IN WINTER
There are two types of blood are warm blood and cold blood. Cold blood is also known as poikilothermic blood where the temperature of the blood varies with respect to the temperature of the surrounding. Cold blood is found in crocodile, fish,…. Warmblood is also known as homothermic blood where the temperature of the blood is maintained at a constant range. Warmblood is found in human, birds,…
Though birds blood produces more heat during winter. The secret of the production of heat is due to the presence of mitochondria. Generally, mammals have no mitochondria in RBC, but birds have mitochondria in their RBC. A research team from Lund and Glasgow took a blood sample of birds and tested them. Using a respirometer, a highly sensitive instrument that can measure how much oxygen the mitochondria consume.
They consume oxygen based on energy production. More energy production leads to more consumption of oxygen. Thus the result shows that more mitochondria no produce more energy. Instead of producing energy mitochondria produces heat. Therefore in winter birds blood become radiator and withstand the cold condition.
