A technical in professional military parlance often called a non-standard tactical vehicle (NSTV).Technical vehicle gets its name from a euphemism back in the days of the Somalia relief rort. Media crews, NGOs and other civilian types had to pay for the security services provided by local warlords.It consist of weapons mounted on a four-wheel drive pickup truck.
Many pickups have been used as technicals including Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton, but the most favoured are the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Land Cruiser. They are typically fitted with heavy machine guns.It is not commonly used by well-funded armies that are able to procure purpose-built combat vehicles, because the soft-skinned civilian vehicles that technicals are based on do not offer very good protection to their crew and passengers.
It was particularly demand in the early stages of the war in Afghanistan. Members of the Army Special Forces acquired some locally-sourced 4x4s for their own use. These were typically Toyota Hilux flatbed pickup trucks in both single and double cab configurations of the type used by both the Northern Alliance and the Taliban. The ubiquity of the vehicles meant that it was relatively easy to source spare parts.
It also gave the Special Forces a lower profile as they could better blend in with friendly forces. These locally-sourced Toyotas were jury-rigged with machine gun mounts and racks for boxes of ammo and other supplies.Technicals played an important role in the 1990s Somali Civil War and the War in Somalia (2006–2009). After the fall of the Siad Barre regime and the collapse of the Somali National Army (SNA), it was rare for any Somali force to field armored fighting vehicles.
