This is the newest dinosaur discovery and the largest one of the species ever found. This dinosaur was part of the titanosaur family. The fossilized bones of this dinosaur were found on the farm of a family in 2006 approximately 1000 kilometres (620 miles) west of Brisbane in the Eromanga Basin.
The dinosaur was 80 to 100 feet long and 16 to 21 feet tall at its hip. It weighed around 25 to 81 tons. Comparing it to the largest carnivorous dinosaur during that time, the Tyrannosaurus rex which was about 40 feet long and 12 feet tall, the Australian cooperensis was larger. Palaeontologists estimate that this dinosaur is in the top five largest dinosaurs.
Australotitan cooperensis was part of the species called sauropods. Sauropods are dinosaurs that walk on four legs, had long necks and tails, and ate leaves. Research says that it is related to three other sauropods found in Australia that date back to the same time period.
Initially, the discovery of the bone was kept a secret as it was a painful task of digging it out and studying it. In 2007 the skeleton (named Cooper) was put on display to the public. After years of research, palaeontologists have finally been able to tell more about the dinosaur in detail.
